Open-top thimble, known as a "tailor's thimble", since tailors push the needle against the nail rather than with the fingertip as in dressmaking or hat making.
This nickel-plated brass thimble will allow you to push through layers of canvas without hurting your finger.

Handy tip: for those who sew all day long, you can apply nail varnish to the inside of your thimble to prevent skin perspiration (which is acidic) from oxidising your thimble and blackening your fingertips.
