Hair canvas, or wool canvas, is an essential interfacing in the traditional construction of jackets and coats. This 175 gsm canvas is designed to structure the garment without adding weight, acting as a flexible framework. Its composition of wool, goat hair and viscose gives it hold, suppleness and durability. It is manufactured in Italy to the highest quality standards.
This hair canvas, also called wool canvas, is a heavy interfacing designed for pieces requiring a soft structure and lasting hold. It acts as a mechanical reinforcement without weighing down the work, ensuring the longevity of the shape. This canvas provides hold and comfort without excessive rigidity. It is manufactured in Italy and sold by the linear metre.
Usage advice
This canvas is the foundation of traditional interfacing. It is cut to the shape of the jacket front and all interfacing pieces (chest piece, collar canvas, etc.) are basted to it by hand, creating a coherent structure. For optimal results and to prevent any subsequent distortion, it is strongly recommended to shrink the canvas with steam before working with it, in order to stabilise its fibres and prevent any subsequent shrinkage. It is basted to the main fabric with temporary stitches, to allow adjustments. The interfacing is placed on the wrong side of the main fabric and helps maintain the collar lapel, define the shoulder line and distribute the tensions of the outer fabric.
The interfacing can be used in combination with other canvases such as the chest piece. Assembly seams should be done with catch stitches to avoid marking the outer fabric. For lapel applications, a manual under-stitch is recommended to achieve a neat lapel that rolls properly.
