Abaca fibres woven in plain weave, also known as sisal or sinamay in millinery. The loose weave of this material creates a transparency, allowing you to layer several pieces (of identical or different colours) to achieve different effects. Sisal is worked damp, so as not to break the fibre when stretching the material over a hat block. It is also possible to work sisal three-dimensionally, in space. Sisal works particularly well on the bias, notably due to its loose weave.

Sisal is a material widely used for making ceremony hats.
