Woolfelt Hat Body - Chartreuse Yellow

This wool felt hood is an unstiffened base for hat making, crafted from 100% virgin sheep's wool. Its cone or cloche configuration is specifically sized to allow for the creation of various hats and headpieces through blocking. The material is supplied unsized (without stiffener), granting the milliner total control over the final rigidity of the piece. This product is designed to be shaped on wooden hat blocks.

Usage Advice

Preparation (Shaping): The felt must be generously steamed or lightly soaked before any manipulation. A steady steam source is required to soften the fibers and facilitate the shrinking (controlled contraction) necessary for blocking on the mold.

Blocking: The hood is designed to be shaped on wooden hat blocks. Progressively stretch the felt over the block to achieve the desired crown and brim. Firmly secure the excess material at the base using blocking pins, cords, or strings to maintain tension during the drying process.

Stiffening: Applying a liquid stiffener (sizing) is essential to give the felt its final desired rigidity, as this base is supplied untreated. Choose a stiffener suited to the level of firmness required (e.g., Permafix 50 or gum arabic).

Finishing: Once dried and stiffened, the edge of the hood can be trimmed to the desired final dimension and bound or hemmed depending on the style of hat (cloche, small brim).
