Dutch canvas, also known as millinery bolting cloth, is a 100% cotton plain weave used to create bases for stretched fabric hats. Dutch canvas is worked wet for blocking on a wooden block and stiffens as it dries. Then, it is glazed with tarlatan over the Dutch canvas using an iron. This smooths out all the roughness of the Dutch canvas. The operation can be repeated a second time for extra firmness. Finally, you fix the fabric onto your base.
