Tarlatan, also called singaline, is a starched 100% cotton cloth used in the making of so-called "stretched fabric" hats. It can be used over Dutch canvas and over gummed canvas. Tarlatan is worked damp and with an iron. The moisture and the heat of the iron allow the tarlatan to adhere to the canvas (Dutch or gummed). Rubbing it with a hot iron will make the starch become smooth and slightly shiny.
You can place another piece of Dutch canvas over your tarlatan to obtain a thicker base with more firmness.
Adding a Dutch canvas and a tarlatan together gives you a double canvas.
