Wool felt cone - Anthracite Grey

This cone is a base for hat making, unstiffened, made from 100% virgin sheep wool. Its cone or capeline configuration is specially sized to allow the creation by moulding of hats and various headwear. The material, unstiffened, allows total control of the final degree of rigidity by the milliner. This product is intended for shaping on hat blocks or wooden blocks.

Usage Tips

Preparation (Blocking): The felt must be generously moistened with steam or light soaking before any handling. The use of a stable steam source is required to soften the fibres and facilitate the shrinking (controlled shrinkage) necessary for sizing / moulding on the block.

Moulding on a Block: The cone is designed to be shaped on wooden blocks or hat blocks. Proceed with the gradual stretching of the felt on the block to obtain the desired crown and brim. Firmly secure the excess material under the brim using blocking pins, cords and strings to maintain tension during drying.

Stiffening: The application of a liquid stiffener is essential to give the felt the desired final rigidity, as this base is supplied without initial treatment. Choose a stiffener suited to the desired level of firmness (for example: Permafix 50 or gum arabic).

Finishing: After drying and stiffening, the initial edge of the cone can be cut to the desired final dimension and trimmed or hemmed according to the envisaged hat style (capeline, small brim).

Additional Information

The cone is ideal for creating shapes requiring moderate shrinking: small-brimmed hats, capeline shapes, fascinators, and caps.

Requires the steps of steam/soaking, block moulding, drying and stiffening to give the hold and keep the shape over time.

The use of protective gloves is recommended when handling chemical stiffeners.

Care Instructions

Storage: Keep the cones flat in their original shape, away from excessive humidity and direct light to prevent deformation or discolouration of the fibres.

Handling: Avoid folding or creasing the felt before the moulding process, which could create creases that are difficult to remove during moistening.
