Piano wire - 1mm

Piano wire is a high-carbon spring steel wire ($\text{C}85$), cold-drawn, offering an excellent combination of rigidity and elastic flexibility. With a diameter of 1 mm, it is designed to resist permanent deformation and return to its initial shape even after significant stress. This material is a fundamental element for professionals requiring a non-deformable framework or reinforcement. It is a hard steel wire.

Usage advice

• Professional Millinery: The 2 mm wire is ideal for structuring and stiffening the brims of caps, the wide brims of hats and capelines subject to high stress. It ensures impeccable shape retention. It is generally held to the hat with a zigzag stitch or a brass wire stitch.

• Blocking: To insert the wire into a hem or sheath, it is advisable to pre-bend the piano wire with suitable pliers (quality cutting pliers or round-nose pliers) to avoid excessive tension on the fabric or leather during installation.

• Joining: The ends are traditionally joined by welding (with a welding station suitable for $\text{C}85$ carbon steels) or, for a heat-free method, by using crimping sleeves. It is also possible to maintain the joint by stitching, overlapping the piano wire over a few centimetres (about 5 cm).

• Other Applications: Its strength makes it indispensable in modelling for control rods of model aircraft, in art metalwork and in the manufacture of custom springs for precision mechanics. Also in Haute Couture for structuring certain garment models. Piano wire can also be used as a framework for bags, in leather goods.

• Do not use for lifting or pulling

Additional Information

• Storage: Piano wire is sensitive to oxidation. It must be stored in a dry environment, away from humidity. Application of a light protective film (mineral oil or anti-rust oil) is recommended for long-term storage.

• Protection: The use of safety glasses is mandatory when cutting, due to the wire tension which can cause dangerous projections.

• Recycling: This material is fully recyclable as a special steel.

Care advice
